About GeoPatternLab
GeoPatternLab is a growing collection of 48 free, browser-based tools for making geometric and optical art. Each tool is dedicated to a distinct but related visual language — from classic kaleidoscopes and mandalas to op art, fractals, tessellations, cellular automata, and Islamic geometric patterns — so you can create unique artwork in real time by drawing or adjusting parameters.
Our mission
We want the mathematics of pattern to be something anyone can play with. Symmetry, tiling, recursion, and emergence are usually locked behind specialist software or code. GeoPatternLab turns each idea into a focused, hands-on tool that runs instantly in your browser — no sign-up, no install, no cost — so students, designers, educators, and hobbyists can explore and create right away.
How the tools work
Every tool is built around the actual technique it represents. The symmetry tools implement true reflection and rotation groups; the tiling tools use published constructions such as Penrose and pinwheel subdivisions; the generative tools use deterministic, seeded algorithms (Voronoi diagrams, L-systems, flow fields, and Gray-Scott reaction-diffusion); and the automata faithfully implement rule sets like Conway's Game of Life and Langton's Ant. Because generation is seeded, a shareable URL reproduces the exact same result every time.
Rendering uses the right engine for each medium: HTML canvas and WebGL for real-time raster and GPU effects, SVG for crisp vector tilings, and p5.js for freehand drawing. Everything renders on your device, and your work stays local until you export it as a high-resolution PNG or, where supported, a scalable SVG for print.
